Cutting through the Industrial Digitalisation hype

The growing prevalence of big data and artificial intelligence on the logistics sector offers businesses the potential to improve efficiencies on a scale never seen before.

Industry 4.0 is revolutionising the sector, allowing us to understand what is happening within a warehouse in real-time. For both Conveyor Networks and our sister company, imio, understanding how this can bring a new innovative dimension to our service offer is key.

We recently partnered with the Virtual Engineering Centre (VEC), with the support of LCR 4.0 Skills for Growth funding to develop an Augmented Reality (AR) app that would provide employees on the shop floor with a simple multi-function interface. The AR app recognises physical hardware in the warehouse and allows engineers to pull up detailed physical, electrical and mechanical schematics along with access to digital maintenance manuals. It also offers employees instant and easily accessible information about the system used on a day-to-day basis, enabling them to interact with it in the most efficient manner.

In addition the app also offers the potential to provide real-time visibility of stock level and lead time for consumables used by a particular machine for up-to-date management of stock. It’s preventative maintenance dashboard, is able to present data including noise, vibration, temperature and electrical characteristics of hardware, to highlight changes in trends and indicate the need for maintenance. “Working with the VEC has helped us cut through the hype of Industrial Digitalisation. This project has demonstrated a practical use of augmented reality that draws together the threads of Industrial IoT, Big Data and AI. The results of this project offer the potential for efficiency improvements and productivity gains, by providing an intuitive and practical tool that will inform the next decade of interface development.”
