Laser Printer (A4/A5)

Laser printers are not optimised to print adhesive backed media. The higher temperatures of a laser printer can cause adhesive bleeding from the label, which can consequently cause adhesive residue buildup inside the printer.

However it the following advantages can be:

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Accessible and efficient common printer (easier to source spares)
  • Higher quality print of text

Disadvantages:

  • Slower first page production time
  • Large amount of maintenance due to not being designed for 24/7 printing
  • Barcodes require more ink, driving up toner costs
  • Susceptible to smudging
  • More complicated maintenance and increased downtime

Thermal Printer

Thermal Printer (A4/A5)

Thermal printers are highly reliable and optimally designed for label printing, making them flexible for printing thousands of labels at a time. Adhesive bleed is not an issue for thermal printers, as their operating temperatures are much lower that laser fuser stations.

Advantages:

  • Fast first page production time
  • Designed specifically for label printing
  • Crisp, clear bar code printing with highest rates of scannability
  • Simple to operate
  • No toner expenses
  • Durable
  • Easy to maintain (just swap out the paper)

Disadvantages:

  • Higher upfront cost
  • More specialist equipment
  • Lower text print quality

Label Printer

Label printers are highly reliable and robust as they are solely designed for label printing. Label printers are small thermal printing units. Adhesive bleed is not an issue for thermal printers, as their operating temperatures are much lower that laser printers.

Advantages:

  • Very fast first label production time
  • Designed specifically for label printing
  • Crisp, clear barcode printing with highest rates of scannability
  • Simple to operate
  • No toner expenses
  • Durable
  • Easy to maintain (just swap out the labels)
  • Low upfront cost

Disadvantages:

  • Requires the label to be removed from the non-stick adhesive back
