There are three types of document printers to choose from, Inkjet, Laser and Thermal.

  • Inkjet printers are almost strictly used by consumers. They are slow, unreliable and their consumables are expensive.
  • Laser printers are designed for business. Most businesses use laser printers due to their low cost of operation and high speed printing capabilities.
  • Thermal printers are designed for the purpose of receipts and shipping labels. They are ideal due to their small number of consumables and fast printing capabilities. They also don’t require the printer to warm up first, making the first page to print time considerably lower.

With all operational decisions there will likely be a cost implication for your business. Here are some considerations that could impact your decision when choosing which printing solution suits your warehousing needs:

  • Thermal printing requires special treated paper; thus the paper is more expensive than regular cut sheet paper.
  • Although laser printing uses regular cut sheet paper, it also requires a supply of toner, which can be expensive.
  • The cost of laser printing is dependent on the amount of printing surface area, due to the amount of toner used. If a document has a large amount of images / logos on it, then this will increase the toner usage significantly and thus increase the cost of laser printing.
  • The smaller the paper size (i.e. a5 or smaller), the more cost effective thermal printing becomes, due to the reduced cost of paper.
